12 Lifestyle Tips for Protecting Your Skin Against Sun Damage

Part Four-Hyperpigmentation Series

When it comes to protecting your skin from sun damage, it is vital to take proactive measures. Sun exposure can lead to hyperpigmentation, premature aging, and other skin conditions. The ultraviolet (UV) rays of the sun can be especially damaging, therefore, it is important to take steps to protect your skin.

Here are my Top 12 Tips:

  • Every. Single. Day-Use UVA/UVB Broad Spectrum Sunscreen for extra protection against both UV Rays.

  • Reapply Sunscreen throughout the day.

  • Do Not Depend on Sunscreen in Make-up- You would have to use a quarter size amount to get the coverage of SPF you need.

  • Using Skincare Formulated to Reduce (melanin production) and to Fade (to minimize hyperpigmentation) is a critical component for protecting the skin from sun damage.

  • You MUST be consistent with skincare!

  • Use accessories such as (car window tint, umbrellas, wide-brim hat ect.) that protect your skin from the sun.

  • Avoid Direct Sun Exposure to the sun during peak hours of the day.

  • Wear Hats and Clothing With SPF Protection.

  • Use Lip Balm With SPF to protect lips from sun damage.

  • Wear Sunglasses to protect eyes from harmful UV Rays (sunlight entering the eyes triggers melanin production).

  • Eat Foods High in Antioxidants to help repair the damage by the sun (such as blueberries, kale, and spinach) and help reduce inflammation.

  • Eat Foods High in Vitamin C (such as oranges and bell peppers). This helps reduce inflammation within the body.

It's essential to protect your skin from sun damage by taking proactive measures. Taking these steps will not only help you maintain a youthful looking complexion but it will also reduce your risk for more serious health issues that could arise due to prolonged exposure to ultraviolet radiation.

*A note from Linda Roman-

It’s imperative that you are proactive with your skin. Yes, this series was about hyperpigmentation but what causes hyperpigmentation causes skin cancer too. With the amount of sun exposure that we have living in Arizona, it increases our risk of skin cancer. I see the effect of the sun on clients every day (myself included). It is easier to prevent problems than it is to fix them when they occur.

Just like the habit of brushing your teeth every morning, using sunscreen should be the same way. I will never stop saying this. Sunscreen every.single day. No matter what.
