Debunking 5 Common Skincare Myths
You've heard all the myths before—pores can shrink, you don’t need toners, oily skin doesn’t need moisturizer, and you only need sunscreen if you’re outside. Are these skincare myths true or false? Let’s take a deep dive and debunk some of these common misconceptions.
Pores Can Shrink – False
Your pore size depends on the amount of sebum (oil) your skin produces. No cream or serum will physically shrink your pores. The best thing you can do for pores is to ensure they stay unclogged by regularly exfoliating your skin. Not exfoliating could potentially clog your pores with dead skin cells, oil, and dirt causing impaction that "stretches" your pores over time.
Toner Is Unnecessary – False
An important step in your skincare routine is using a toner after cleansing. Toners help remove any dirt or debris leftover from cleansing. Toners also work because they restore moisture levels in the skin which help keep it hydrated.
Oily Skin Doesn't Need Moisturizer – False
It might seem counterintuitive to put moisturizer on oily skin but it's very important for the overall health of your complexion. Your skin will overproduce oil, to compensate for the lack of hydration. Oily skin needs moisturizer just as much as dry skin does—it's just a matter of finding the right moisturizers for you.
You Only Need Sunscreen When Your Outside – False
Sunscreen should be part of any daily skincare routine, regardless of whether you plan on going outside that day! UVA rays from sunlight penetrate through windows, even if you're inside all day long, UV rays are reaching your skin. Make sure to apply SPF 50 (or higher) every morning for optimal protection against sun damage, wrinkles, age spots, and worse yet–skin cancer!
