Just Wear The Sunscreen.

It’s no secret that daily use of sunscreen is important. We've learned to apply it before any outside activities during the summer months. Most people don't realize that sunscreen should be worn every day, rain or shine.

I continue educating clients about the importance of sun protection daily. Majority of people believe that sun damage only occurs after prolonged exposure (such as getting sunburn at the lake, ect.), but this is not the case. Even short periods of exposure (going outside to check the mail, ect.) are what I call  “deposits in your sun bank." Each daily exposure to UVA/UVB rays is a deposit into your sun bank. These deposits cumulate over time (from the day you were born until today). Eventually, you will start to see the accumulation of damage on your skin. You might not see the effects when you are young, but as you get older, it becomes more evident. Sun damage is expensive to treat and it is my number one client complaint.

Here are the tips I give clients about sunscreen:

  • Use SPF 50 or higher and reapply during the day

  • Yearly skin checks by a dermatologist starting at the age of 30.

  • Do not rely on SPF in makeup or moisturizers (you would need to use A LOT to get the coverage you need).

  • Cover your skin from your hairline to your chest (Treat your chest like your face with sunscreen).

  • Have short hair or hair in a pony-tail? Don’t forget to apply SPF on your ears and back of your neck.

  • Apply SPF every morning. I repeat, every morning.

  • The younger you start wearing SPF, the less you have to pay when you're older to address all the photo-damage and visits to the dermatologist.

  • Wear sunscreen on overcast days because of exposure to UVA (Ultra Violet Aging Rays).

  • Any skin changes, make an appointment with your dermatologist.

  • Yes, you still need to wear sunscreen if you are “not outside." because you take the trash outside (exposure), you check the mail (exposure), you walk from your car to the office door (exposure), you drive to and from work (exposure)…I can keep going on about this…

The best way to protect your skin from the sun is by using sunscreen every day. No matter what time of year it is, the sun’s rays can cause damage that cumulates over time. That’s why it’s important to make sunscreen a part of your daily routine, just like brushing your teeth or taking a shower.
