Microneedling Aftercare: Take Care of Your Skin for Best Results

Microneedling is one of the revolutionary skincare treatments that truly boast an impressive set of results following consistent treatments. Although this is not a one-and-done affair, microneedling has proven its effectiveness on various skin types, with a wide range of benefits!

While these results are impressive, it’s important to know that they do not come completely on their own. Behind every successful microneedling treatment is a thorough aftercare plan that helps your skin perfect the recovery process and deliver the best results.

Why you should get microneedling done

Microneedling sessions do a wonderful job at improving the look and texture of skin, but who exactly is the treatment targeted at? Honestly, as long as your skin is not suffering from an active outbreak, it’s practically for everyone! This process isn’t just limited to those struggling with acne scarring.

Microneedling helps acne scarring fade

Having deep, stubborn acne scars can impact your self esteem and how you feel about your skin. Activities like applying makeup are made significantly more difficult as foundations seem to sink and settle into each nook and cranny left on the surface of your skin. Thankfully, this minimally invasive treatment allows for the rejuvenation of your skin, and a minimized appearance of acne scars.

While microneedling will always provide an improvement in your skin, it is important to know that the result will vary depending on the type and depth of the acne scars. Deeper acne scarring requires multiple sessions to effectively treat.

Microneedling improves your skin’s texture

While acne scars may be one of the primary reasons someone may seek out the help of a microneedling treatment, the reality is that there is so much more to gain from the process than removing old scars. Those with rough skin texture and those with pigmentation issues can also benefit from skin microneedling. As each needle enters the skin, it causes micro-injuries that encourage blood flow and collagen production, improving the look and feel of your skin.

Pores appear smaller after microneedling

Most of the time, reducing the size of your pores requires more than a special face wash. In fact, even some of the most basic skin care routines can fail to reduce the size of enlarged pores the same way that microneedling can. If you’ve found yourself consistently struggling with noticeable pores due to aging or excess sebum production, consider using microneedling as an effective solution.

What you should and shouldn’t do for your microneedling aftercare

Although most of the progress your skin undergoes during your microneedling journey is directly due to the treatment itself, the importance of aftercare still remains as an important point of conversation. Failure to carry out proper aftercare tips and techniques could not only diminish your results, but also potentially have adverse effects on your skin.

Cleanse and moisturize everyday

Microneedling causes micro-traumas to your skin. As such, one of the crucial parts of allowing your skin to recover is finding a gentle cleanser and moisturizer to ensure that no infections or clogged pores occur as your skin heals.

Do not irritate your skin with exfoliants

During the first few days after your microneedling session, it’s important to skip out on exfoliation. While exfoliating between sessions is great for skin health, you need to let your skin rest for a few days. Those micro-traumas need to heal, or else you cause irritation and potentially infection to your healing skin.

Physical activities should be put on hold

In the hours following your treatment, your skin can be left increasingly susceptible to irritants. As the little needles enter and exit the skin, a small channel is left behind. This pathway can become clogged with dirt and body oil when you engage in physical activities like running or working out. For about 48 hours, minimize the amount of sweating you cause your body to do.

Avoid smoking or drinking alcohol

Smoking cigarettes, other tobacco products, or consuming alcohol can slow down your body’s ability to heal itself. Keeping that in mind, it is recommended that individuals undergoing microneedling treatments should avoid smoking and alcohol for at least two weeks following treatments.

Use sunscreen to deter sun damage

Similar to waxing, it is crucial to keep your freshly treated skin out of sunlight. Not only will UV rays impede proper healing, prolonged exposure could result in even more damaged skin. Your skin is photosensitive during healing, and will sunburn quickly. Always be sure to apply SPF daily following your treatments.
