Skin Care in Your 40s, 50s, and Beyond

How to build a skincare routine focused on anti-aging

Even if you’ve had a skin routine that works, as we age, our skin requires more nutrients and hydration than before. Over time, skin loses elasticity and healthy fats that support smooth, glowing skin.

Thankfully, we have new products that encourage collagen production and moisture. By reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, they promote younger-looking skin. Choosing the right cleansers and moisturizers goes a long way toward regaining the skin of your youth!

Choosing your cleanser

The right face wash can promote a healthy glow, especially in aging skin. Removing makeup and buildup from the day is just part of what cleansers can do. Avoid soaps with sulfates, fragrances, and retinol as they dry the face.

Instead, focus on ingredients like hydroxy acids and natural humectants like hyaluronic acid. These compounds encourage skin to hang onto moisture, which plump and freshen your complexion. Aloe vera, glycerin, and panthenol are all-natural methods to fight aging skin.

A light exfoliator

One of the main culprits for dull, tired-looking skin is actually dead skin cells. By exfoliating, you remove this unwanted layer and reveal glowing skin beneath. Aging causes skin to thin, so you don’t want anything aggressive in your products.

Choose an exfoliator that treats your skin gently. Some cleansers include jojoba beads to help lift off the dead layer. Once gone, the cells beneath love the extra moisture you’ll provide them.

The best products contain a gentle acid, like AHA, to smooth out the face and reduce pore size. In addition, they can even out skin tone and minimize dark spots.

You don’t need to exfoliate every day. Once or twice a week is usually enough for most people.

Skincare serums

After washing and exfoliating, your cells are primed for nutrients and hydration. Antioxidants protect you from environmental factors, and hyaluronic acid (HA) increases moisture.

Look for a hyaluronic acid serum that includes retinol and peptides. Each of these ingredients serves a purpose.

Peptides improve skin tone and reduce the appearance of age spots, fine lines, and wrinkles. Retinol enhances cell turnover and stimulates collagen production, creating plumper, firmer skin. HA is naturally produced in the body but declines as we age. Including this in your serum ensures you have the most hydrated, healthy skin possible.

Apply an eye cream

The skin around our eyes is some of the thinnest in the whole body. Because of that, it’s most susceptible to the signs of aging. Protecting it through the dedicated use of sunscreen is great, but sometimes you need a boost.

Many of the same ingredients mentioned above are helpful to reduce bags under the eyes. But you may be surprised to see vitamin C and caffeine added to the list!

Vitamin C protects your skin from the elements and encourages melanin production in the skin. Caffeine calms inflammation and narrows the blood vessels beneath the surface.

Niacinamide is another element you’ll see in the best eye creams. It promotes a resilient, smooth texture and helps even skin tone.

Use a face mask some nights

Tired, worn-out-looking skin needs some extra TLC, and face masks are the ideal approach. Because they sit on the face for a prolonged period, the nutrients and hydration they deliver go deep.

Look for masks that include HA and vitamin C, as they encourage cells to hang on to moisture. Vitamin E is another powerful anti-aging ingredient that, along with resveratrol, helps prevent and repair fine lines and wrinkles.

For an extra punch, use an overnight mask. Ingredients like alpha hydroxy acids and shea butter need a little more time to soak in.

You don’t need to do this every night, though if you’re just adding hydration, it can’t hurt.

Other daily tips for mature skin care

Taking care of your skin is an investment in the future. Even if your twenties are a distant memory, you’ll benefit from a daily routine.

Always apply a daily SPF and protect against the sun

Environmental factors are significant contributors to early aging in the skin. UV rays from the sun reduce the elasticity of your sensitive skin. They also contribute to hyperpigmentation, age spots, and fine lines, and wrinkles.

Incorporate a daily SPF foundation or sunscreen into your routine. Even 30 SPF is adequate in most cases. Look for natural, mineral-based products as they can be applied under makeup. Because they dry matte, they’re ideal for daily wear.

Before you head outside for pickleball or golf, apply a thin layer, and you’re good to go! You may need another application for complete protection if you’re swimming or engaged in strenuous activities.

Eat healthily and follow a great sleep schedule

Like your muscles, your skin needs a healthy diet and regular sleep to recover. Eat a balanced diet, high in protein and low in processed foods to improve your skin. Make sure you’re getting enough variety, or you’ll miss out on essential nutrients. And supplement if you’re missing something vital.

Regular sleep cycles get more challenging as we age. Our rhythms change, and we don’t sleep as much or as deeply as we once did. Try to protect your sleep schedule as much as possible by putting away screens an hour before bedtime. You may also incorporate a routine before bed that includes meditation or other relaxing activities.

Other considerations include getting enough exercise and avoiding caffeine later in the day.

Older skin benefits greatly from moisturizer

Aging skin has a smaller number of sweat glands than before. Don’t worry; it’s a normal part of the process. But, an unwelcome side effect is that your skin begins to dry out faster. Including a daily moisturizer benefits dry, thinning skin.

Some may even be used on the face and body! Look for ingredients like ceramides and HA for long-lasting moisture retention.
